Now here's a strange one. I've visited my share of ghost towns but this one takes the cake. J. Lorraine Ghost Town is a real life, boot stomping, straight outta a John Wayne movie looking ghost town. Story goes, a man named George Richards bought the property to do some farming. And as he was tilling the earth he kept digging up old planks of wood. After collecting quite the odd and large amount of wood he decided to do some research on the property. Turns out there was a town on the property named J. Lorraine active sometime in the 1900's. After some force of nature tore most of the town down as well as cause several deaths, the townsfolk decided to leave, abandoning all the remainder buildings behind. Another story credits an angry mob burning the town down, but that depends on who you ask.
So George rebuilds the town, and expands the concept with a maze for the kids, and a restaurant and movie screen/stage. Honestly the place is awesome. We walked in on a afternoon and had the place to ourselves. Walked into each building and structure to hear the creaking floorboards and the wind howling through the old window panes. I loved it. Really felt like walking back in time or a really awesome movie set. Now, rumor has it that the buildings still house some of their former residents. People claim to hear voices and smell pipe smoke. As I walked alone into most of these structures I could hear what sounded like people walking behind some of the buildings, but given the fact that a couple people were there setting up it could easily have been them. And then I can make the argument that they were setting up in the kitchen while i walking through the outer structures away from anywhere that needed set up. There was an eerie feeling walking alone among old western structures, but I never experienced anything out of the ordinary on this trip. Although I might on my trip back. I gotta try some of their famous burgers. Best in town they say!
