After visiting the Kingsland house, we stopped for a bite to eat and a quick historical marker stop in Marble Falls. FYI if you want to experience an excellent slice of pie, head down to the Blue Bonnet Cafe in Marble Falls. So freaking good!
Another strange marker in the area is Dead Man's Hole. I covered this cave and it's macabre history in a previous blog. Click the button below to know more.
After filling our pie holes, we traveled on south and across Austin to the city of Bastrop, TX. Here along a quiet stretch of road you will find the 1974 version's original gas station. This was probably my favorite stop of the trip. It turns out that someone has purchased the property, which before this year sat in abandoned disrepair, and plans on restoring it to it's movie glory. The owner is calling it a "horror bbq resort". Hell yea! As I pulled into the dirt lot my jaw dropped. It was like a scene from the movie. The white and red We Slaughter BBQ sign beautifully perched on-top of the roof. And pulling my jeep around to the side of the lot, my eyes quickly locked onto what was parked in the back. A green 1972 Ford Club Wagon Van. Maybe the year is off by a bit, but it looks so damn close.
So this place is going to be an actual bbq joint. Exterior and interior set to look like the movie. I am thrilled at the idea. At the time of visiting it looked like they were still in the process of fixing things up. paint cans, lumber and such were still around. Scheduled grand opening will be October 8th! I will absolutely be returning at this date to see this place in all it's glory.
