We ended up hitting road delay after road delay and were racing against time and daylight to get to the 2003 remake house. I could watch the sun slipping away on my left as we drove past small towns and farms, thinking to myself with each passing minute that the light and clouds would make a perfect backdrop to the house. "This could be a good photo!", a few minutes later, "this would be a good photo!" But as we pulled onto the final road, the last bit on daylight did slip away and we were in complete darkness. The safety net of daylight was no longer with us, and we were overcome with the feeling of caution. Even though we were visiting a fictional movie location, being in the middle of nowhere in complete darkness really does something to ya. Never know if someone out here gets their kicks tormenting fans who dare show up to a horror movie house at nightfall. The house is a private residence and the owners are adamant on no trespassing. Security cameras and lights adorn the entrance and the only view would be from the road. Please be respectful when visiting this site and stay off the property.
As I was setting up to take a few photos, Marcus decided to do a Facebook live video in the meantime. We had been there for at least 20min or so before he started his video. But halfway through, a metallic squealing sound comes from directly behind us. "what the hell is that noise??" he exclaimed. We immediately turned around and after my eyes adjusted a bit, there was a windmill just off the side of the road. This was a strange coincidence since we had been there for some time and there was no apparent change in wind or weather. Marcus' theory is they have it on remote to mess with people. I'm was glad it was a wind mill and not some guy running out of the corn! Got a few shots and admired the stars for a few minutes and decided it was time to pack up and go. As we were doing so, headlights could be seen slowly making it's way down the road in the distance. For anyone who has ever lived out in the country, most people fly down these back roads, so I was a bit concerned at a slow moving vehicle. I finished folding up my tripod and was about to jump into the jeep when the car passed us and I could see it was the local police. The squad car stops in the middle of the road and does a u-turn. I sighed in relief as it was the police and not some local farmer with a short fuse. I explained to the officer we were just taking a few shots and were on our way. He was courteous and explained that they come out often due to having issues in the past with the fans. so if you visit the site, please respect the property and limit your stay to the minimum.
We will be making a return visit to this place to see it in the daylight. I think our imaginations won't be so wild then. Stay tuned for updates next month on the We Slaughter BBQ grand opening and the 2003 gas station location. Thanks for taking this Texas Chain Saw Massacre trip with me.
